On December 20th, 2014 the training named “Peer education: the European No Hate Speech Movement and the Armenian youth” took place in the Yerevan office of “New Generation” Humanitarian NGO.
In the first part of the training the participants were provided with the information about the need of startup of the NHSM in Europe, it importance and activities. NelliGishyan presented the works and projects done during the last 2 years both in Armenia and on the international platform.
Afterwards the participants got acquainted with the NHSM, gained knowledge on what hate speech is and what are the issues related to it, how to differ hate speech from the freedom of expression. The hate speech cases, their causes and consequences among the Armenian youth both online and online was discussed as well.
The third part of the training was dedicated to the registration on the NHSM platform and to the No hate Watch. The participants gained skills on how to register on the website, how to join the movement and how to report online hate speech cases on the platform, how to use tags and definitions. Afterwards a practical work helped the participants to discuss and understand weather the presented situation was a hate speech or freedom of speech.
The training was concluded by the establishment of the Young Armenians’ NHSM Action Group which will implement diverse projects and events addressed to eliminate hate among the Armenian Society.
As a positive closing the participants floated sky lanterns expressing their solidarity with the movement against hate speech and hopping that next year intolerance will reduce and each person will use his/her/their rights due to state and international law.
