Serj Gabyan’s feature film project “The Garnet Necklace” about the Armenian Genocide

 

Serj Gabyan’s feature film project “The Garnet Necklace” about the destiny of an Armenian family that has survived the genocide. 
““The Garnet Necklace” will depict fragments from the  tragic history of the Armenian people in the beginning of the 20th century, however the film will mostly be devoted to revealing the necessity of overcoming the historic enmity between nations”, - said the Director of the film Serj Gabyan in the interview given to the Asekose.am reporter.  
The action in the film “The Garnet Necklace” evolves around a piece of jewelry with traditional significance that has been created in the 17th century by an Armenian master jeweler  which is actually a necklace that is depicting a genealogical tree consisting of golden pendants each of which is bearing a name of a representative of the jeweler’s big family. The necklace has been kept always by the senior women of the family as an asset of common value. 
As stated by the Director the viewer will see in the film the story of this unique piece of jewelry since 17th century till our days.  
“In the result of historical events passing through wars and revolutions being lost and found again, with almost mystic coincidence but more thanks to high humanistic qualities of some ordinary people the necklace has returned always to the descendants of this Armenian family and in our times being lost again as if attracts the contemporary representative of the family to itself in nowhere else than New York”, -says the Director.    
Cautious not to reveal any important content information to the Asekose.am, Serj Gabyan nevertheless shared with some organizational details about the production of the film.  
“The main production team will consist of international staff. I and the producer of the film Stephan Hekimyan who is the president of the fund “People of the World” operating in Russia are working on this project almost for a year. This February an agreement was signed with a European financial organization that has agreed to finance the project. The idea of the film has been supported by a number of distinguished Armenians from France, USA  and Russia, some of whom have promised to support the production”,- says Serj Gabyan.  
It is planned to start the production of “The Garnet Necklace” this summer and it will be presented to the international audience next year. 
The author of the script Lilith Mkrtchyan has written it in 2009 inspired by a number of true stories. 
“The main language of the film is English because our objective is to show to the world the distorting impact of the genocide on the destinies of people and nations”, - says Serj Gabyan.
The production will take place in different countries. The general producer Stephan Hekimyan and his American partner together with the author of the script Lilith Mkrtchyan  have started to negotiate with casting agents in order to involve a number of well known Hollywood actors for the leading and some of the supporting roles in the film. Soon everything will be clear”,- says Serj Gabyan.
The board of producers has already signed agreements for the production of the costumes and properties of the film. The editing of the film will be outsourced to one of the Hollywood technical studios. 
The Director stated that the financing of the film has become possible thanks to the efforts of the Fund “People of the World” and the general producer of the film Stephan Hekimyan. The biggest part of the revenues generated by the film will be used by the Fund to continue the accomplishment of its mission which is to support and develop the presentation of the cultural historic heritage of Armenians in the world.
