Last year within the frames of “Energy Efficiency Increase in buildings” program implemented jointly by Yerevan Municipality and the Armenian office of the UNO Development Program the activities aimed at energy efficiency in the blocks of flats at 6, D. Varuzhan living quarter in Avan district were implemented. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Armenia Eiji Taguchi familiarized himself with the work done in the first heat-insulated block of flats.
The head of Yerevan Municipality Department of Development and Investment Program Armen Harutyunyan, the UN Resident Coordinator and the UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia Bradley Busetto and the Climate Change Program Coordinator of the UNDP Armenia office Diana Harutyunyan also took part in the open-air discussion organized in the yard of the building. It was informed that the building was selected taking into account its high seismic safety, the central heating system operated here, which made it possible to get well-grounded idea of how efficient this approach can be.
The work included covering the external walls of the building with thermo-insulated substance increasing heat transfer resistance, replacement of doors and windows on the floors, thermo-insulation of the roofs and placement of windows in the open space of cellars. The residents of the block of flats stated that they had already made sure that the program was effective as their heating costs decreased by half.
The head of the Department of Development and Investment Programs of Yerevan Municipality Armen Harutyunyan noted that Yerevan Municipality, the UNO Armenian Office and European Investment Bank are discussing the further programs of energy efficiency increase in the blocks of flats and community-owned public buildings.
