EU, Armenia edge towards cooperation deal

Euronews: The EU and Armenia have concluded negotations on a Partnership Agreement.

The deal is likely to be signed in May.

Armenia, as well as Ukraine, were expected to sign more advanced trade pacts with the EU in November 2013 in Vilnius at the Eastern partnership Summit.

But it was followed by the Euromaidan in Kiev.

Armenia also saw protests too. In 2015, Armenians demonstrated against energy prices amid calls for the president to stand down.

The new agreement comes after Armenia’s controversial accession to a Russian-led trade bloc, the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).

The move in 2015 that has been widely credited to strong Russian pressure.

Russia keeps its military presence in Armenia including a deployment of Iskander missile systems.

But the government says it also wants good relations with NATO.

On the second of April, Parliamentary elections will be held in Armenia.

They follow a 2015 referendum that approved reforms to become a parliamentary republic.

President Serge Sargsyan spoke to euronews’ Brussels correspondent Andrei Beketov in an exclusive intervew.
